The Orange County Health Department follows ISDH and ACIP guidelines for vaccination of children and adults. Vaccines for Children (VFC) is a program used by the Health Department to administer vaccines to children 18 years or younger that meet eligibility guidelines.†† The Health Department also participates in the Adult VFC program. These vaccinations are also regulated by ISDH and also have eligibility guidelines.† Vaccinations for Insured individuals are also provided.† All vaccinations are directly entered into the Children and Hoosier Immunization Registry Program (CHIRP) by the Public Health Nurse at time of service.†

Immunizations

There are many areas of education the Public Health Nurse provides.†† Tobacco cessation and support hotlines are provided with education materials. Education is provided to orange county businesses regarding the tobacco ban, signage can also be provided.†† Head Lice education materials and proper eradication techniques can also be given and are recommendations from the ISDH. Head Lice shampoo/oil with comb and hair covering is provided with charge.† Blood pressures and weight can be checked.†††

Tuberculosis Case Managementó Active and Latent

Public Health Education

Animal Bites

If an individual living in Orange County has a lab test positive for a reportable communicable disease, the Indiana State Department of Health alerts the Public Health Nurse. The Public Health Nurse then conducts a confidential investigation of the illness. The investigation can include demographics of the individual, diet history, contacts of the individual and treatment.† Prevention, education about the disease and follow up will also be conducted.

Communicable Disease Investigation

If a child has an Elevated Blood Lead Level (EBLL) greater than 5 the results are reported to the Health Department.† If the lead level is under 10, the public health nurse will educate the family about lead poisoning and the possible source of lead contaminants. If the blood lead level is above 10 the public health nurse and the risk assessor from ISDH will meet with the family at their home and conduct an investigation of the source and educate the family about lead poisoning.† The public health nurse is the case manager of these EBLL cases and will be in contact with the family, doctor and ISDH regarding treatment, prevention and follow up.

Elevated Leadó Case Management

All active cases of Tuberculosis and latent TB infection are managed by the Public Health Nurse.† The Public Health Nurse is notified by ISDH of any active cases in Orange County.†† The Public Health Nurse will be in contact with the doctor and patient for treatment.†† TB skin testing is provided at a charge and read within 48 hours. Medications are provided free of charge.
